|Historically, prison has been a place of separation and punishment.
The goal of TEDXIronwoodStatePrison was to use the global TEDx platform to bridge the divide between society and prisoners.
What we discovered on May 10, 2014, was that when we bring together correctional staff, inmates, innovative thinkers, and influential people from all walks of life to focus on seemingly unsolvable problems, infinite possibilities abound.
What is TEDX?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDX. TEDX is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDX program, but individual TEDX evens are self-organised.
Our event is called TEDXIronwoodStatePrison, where x = independently organized TED event. At our event, live speakers and powerful audience interaction elicited deep emotional and intellectual responses.
The Ironwood project
TEDXIronwoodStatePrison took place on 10 May 2014 at the Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, California. It brought together experts in the field of recidivism — as well as experts in other fields — with prisoners looking for a better life, creating a useful dialogue witnessed by a live audience — and YouTube and Wikia viewers worldwide. Time and again, speakers rose to proclaim the virtues of education in dealing with the problem of mass incarceration.
This site also includes some extraordinary video from other TEDX prison events, so be sure to take a look.
